The Angry Birds Phenomenon is Not Going Away

AB Rio Key Art 660x334 300x151 The Angry Birds Phenomenon is Not Going AwayAngry Birds is taking over the world, with the game’s developers going all Super Mario on us and creating an entire Angry Birds world.  With the game already featured on multiple devices, it seems that multiple games is the next step in the Angry Birds revolution.
Angry Birds was first released in Apple’s App Store in December, 2009. While Apple iDevices and the App Store are still responsible for the majority of its sales, it has now branched out to Android devices and the Sony PlayStation Portable.  Despite all this success however, Rovio, the developers of Angry Birds are not looking to stop any time soon.
Rovio announced a new game on Friday, Angry Birds Rio, which is based on a movie made by Fox.  They also have plans to keep expanding the Angry Birds empire beyond this new game.  “What we’re doing is we’re building out the Angry Birds world,” said Peter Vesterbacka, “Mighty Eagle” of Rovio, adding “Pac-Man is only one game. Mario is a better benchmark.”
What this means for Rovio is simple – they are likely to keep raking in the profits and continue raising the flag for those few app developers out there that do manage to make some money.  What it means for the rest of us will depend on whether you are annoyed or delighted by all those cute little critters.
However, Rovio are hardly the “bedroom developers” that many people think they are, with 40 employees and the likelihood of 100 by the end of the year.  Rovio were also not an overnight success in any way, as Angry Birds was their 52nd published game and their 16th original game release.  While the team at Rovio may be getting slightly too ambitious with their “Super Mario” claim, one thing is for sure – there are more Angry Birds coming your way soon.
