The Discovery Shuttle Takes its Final Flight

022411 launch1 300x225 The Discovery Shuttle Takes its Final FlightDespite a last minute computer glitch, the shuttle Discovery blasted off successfully today on its last ever flight.  With just over 3 seconds to go before the end of the available launch window, Discovery achieved lift off at 4:50:27PM EST.
Discovery is carrying a veteran crew of six, along with supplies and a U.S module destined for the International Space Station.  It has been a tough task getting the 39th and final mission launched, with the project running three and a half months behind schedule due to cracks in the internal tank.  This long wait was almost for nothing, with a range safety system computer causing problems at the T-minus 5-minute mark.
However, this launch was obviously meant to be, as only 3 seconds before it was too late – the glitch was resolved and the countdown commenced.  I am sure there were more than a few nervous moments during this period.  “Well, it was kind of an exciting last few minutes of this countdown,” said Launch Director Mike Leinbach, adding “Several of us have been around for many, many countdowns, and this was one for the record books.”
After the shuttle launched there were some other problems as well, with a number of large pieces of protective foam insulation separating and falling away about four minutes after launch.  However, these pieces do not seem to have done any damage, and fell away after the shuttle had already left the dense lower atmosphere.
“We did see some foam losses,” said astronaut Charles Hobaugh.  “Given the timing of the releases”, he added, “we have no concerns for the vehicle or success. We’ll find out more, of course, as we go through the ascent video with a finer-tooth comb and also after we do the surveys. So we’re looking forward to all that.”
Discovery is going to spend seven days at the International Space Station, leaving on March 5 and returning to Earth on March 8 for a well earned retirement.

Little tips about building your own RC helicopter

Flying RC helicopter is really very exhilarating. Their versatility gives a RC pilot a complete access to the three-dimensional space in such a way that no other machines can! I have played RC helicopter for more than one year but still find that I have just learnt a few tricks that it can perform.
There are generally two micro-helicopters ( indoor ) in the RC market. I have already planned to buy one of them as they can fly inside the living room and even take off on ours hand. Unlike those operated by gas, these electric helicopters are very clean and give out no terrible noise at all. In one nightfall, I visited a web site, which is about how to make a hand made RC helicopter. I was totally impressed and started designing my own helicopter. Here is my helicopter:

The plan of the helicopter had finally been completed. It is not very well drew. The current plan available is only for the fixed pitch design. Please click the above photo for the plan.

Here is the progress of my work:

Several weeks after completing the first model as I describe above, I start to turn my view on a flybarless collective pitch rotor head. The reason for this modification is very simple. Just to get more stability especially during descending. The tail rotor parts from a Concept EP can be converted into a collective pitch rotor head for my helicopter. However, The tail rotor hub is a little bit heavy and big in size. Therefore, I decided to made one from fiberglass circuit board. Just click the photo for the flybarless collective pitch modification I.
This first attempt was actually not success due to the lack of tester damper. Worse was to come, the swasplate came apart during a flight test as the rotor disk is too unstable. I overlook its importance to the cyclic respond at the very beginning and it was doom to failure. Here is my second attempt: (click the photo below for details)

NewlAdde:
I Bought a Hornet CP upgrade weeks ago for my helicopter but never got the time to build it. Also, I want to control the helicopter by my JR3810 Tx which has no 90-degree 3-servo CCPM. Therefore, the servo arrangement must be changed in order to use the 120-degree 3-servo CCPM available. BTW, just bought a Hacker B20-31s for the hornet CP rotor system. How this combination works....coming soon!

NewlAdde:
There was a time many people gave out their tries on CD-Rom motor modification. Some with great result while some fail completely. I finally join the groups trying these tiny brushless motor for hobby use. To me, the power of these brushless motor is really amazing when compare with those bulky brushed speed 300 motor. Just click the photo below for more information:
NewlAdde:
Two new pages had just been uploaded. One is about making your own blade while the other one is aboutLithium cells. Also, a circuit diagram had been added to the page "electronic components"

Have you ever thought about making an airborne video system. Yes, It is also possible for an indoor helicopter. Please click here for details.
Here is a photo gallery page about my helicopter and some of its technical specifications.
Just click the helicopter to visit my video page!
If you know nothing about R/C helicopter, here is the first step leading you to understand it more.

Exercise May Be the Most Effective Weapon Against Aging

treadmill
Keeping active may be the secret to staying young for both mice and men. Researchers from Canada’s McMaster University discovered that endurance exercise could halt the aging process in a group of mice, even though they were genetically engineered to age faster. These furry creatures continued to exhibit the same youthful appearance as normal mice after engaging in a treadmill exercise routine over a period of several months. In addition, the exercise program prevented premature aging in almost every organ of the morphed mice. Details on the mighty mice can be found in the journalProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The results of the analysis indicate that not only can exercise help to prevent an early death, it can also delay the aging process. The researchers said that the exercise routine provided nearly 100 percent protection against graying fur, hair loss, brain and muscle atrophy, and more. According to lead study author Mark Tarnopolsky, a Professor of pediatrics and medicine at McMaster's DeGroote School of Medicine, “What really shocked us was the gonads, the spleen, liver -- every tissue we looked at was made better with the exercise. It has a systemic effect and even prevented a slight shrinkage of the brain.”
The mice in the study were genetically engineered to have an age-inducing defect in their cell powerhouses, known as mitochondria. As mitochondria age, less energy is generated for cells in the body to run on. The mice were assigned to either an exercise or non-exercise group. The exercise group was forced to jog at a brisk paceon a treadmill for 45 minutes, three times weekly. After a five-month period, the researchers found that prevention of premature aging had occurred among all the mice in the exercise group. While these mighty mice remained active and looked as young as ever, the sedentary mice were inactive, more socially isolated, and less fertile, as well as balding and turning gray. Whereas the muscle tissue of the active mice was found to be completely normal, the tissue of the inactive mice showed signs of damage.
But the biggest discovery was seen in the mitochondria of the morphed mice. The mitochondria among these mice had gone from damaged to young and healthy. Experts have long-suspected that the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA mutations over the lifespan leads to the progressive decline in tissue and organ function, which results in aging.
Tarnopolsky noted that the results of the study are applicable to humans and he is hopeful that the outcome for the exercising mice will motivate people to get on the move. He remarked, “When you see the video with the mice barely moving and their sisters moving around healthy, that may shock them into getting their buts off the couch and get some exercise.”
Previous studies on genetically engineered, premature-aging mice have included calorie restriction and a variety of drugs that have had far less promising results. Regarding the benefits of exercise on health, Tarnopolsky pointed out, “Many people falsely believe that the benefits of exercise will be found in a pill. We have clearly shown that there is no substitute for the ‘real thing’ of exercise when it comes to protection from aging.”
The good news is that it’s never too late to get on that treadmill. Tarnopolsky noted that studies have shown that even those who have spent far too much time being sedentary can still reap the benefits of exercise, and gain energy, mobility and promote healthier organs. Take Tarnopolsky’s advice to “Get moving, get active and get your kids moving while they are young.” The road to fitness just may lead to the fountain of youth.

nokiae7 Nokia offers free hardware to worried development communityNokia isn’t the best known name in the US smartphone world, but its recent announcement that it will partner with Microsoft to produce Windows Phone devices – the first time the Finnish developer has ever considered using an external source for its flagship operating system – looks set to change all that. Nokia needs to get developers on its side, however – and it’s attempting bribery.
Members of the company’s Launchpad development service are being offered hardware totalling about $1,000 in order to stick with the company during the awkward transition period as it makes the move from its home grown Symbian and MeeGo mobile platforms to Microsoft’s Windows Phone.
Those who agree to stick around will receive a Nokia E7 slider smartphone, featuring the company’s latest Symbian^3 mobile platform, and the promise of an as-yet unnamed Windows Phone device in the near future.
If that wasn’t enough, developers are also offered free access to the company’s Nokia World and Nokia Developer Summit events, a free user experience evaluation for a single app – which ordinarily costs a surprising amount of money, and can spell the difference between a successful app and a complete failure – and free technical support with up to ten requests.
Developers are also offered free help with publishing their apps, currently developed on the Qt framework, in the Ovi Store – although given that the Ovi Store will almost certainly be replaced with the Windows Marketplace in the near future, it remains to be seen how good an offer that is.
The move clearly shows that Nokia is concerned that its development community, which has got quite used to the unified Qt development platform across MeeGo and Symbian devices, will up sticks and leave as the company moves to Windows Phone. After all, if Windows Phone is the future, they might as well leave Nokia now and get a head-start on things.
This latest offer could be enough to convince them to stay – and demonstrates that, despite falling profits, the Finnish company is serious about spending its cash to help keep its development community alive.
Whether it’s using some of the billions of dollars Microsoft is rumoured to be pouring in to the company is, as yet, unknown.

iPhone 5 to Replace Credit Card?

iphone payment 300x199 iPhone 5 to Replace Credit Card?

Apple Company works on a phone that will allow payment using a technology that could replace the use of credit card
2011 is going to be another year with updates and new releases from Apple. All and sundry are waiting breathless the final announcement on iPhone 5 and iPad2. Every day we are being bombarded by rumors, gossip, and suspicion around these two hot tech products. It seems that this works like a real marketing strategy for Apple; to create buzz long time before launching, then sell in huge quantities.
The technology that could replace the use of credit card is called Near Field Communication (NFC). iPhone 5 would be the most suitable product to use the NFC on. NFC is a wireless technology, similar to Bluetooth and its basic role is to exchange data with other peripheral components by using the radio frequency. In plain English, once this scientific know-how is applied, you will be able to perform mobile payments, as you do with a credit card.
BMW plata NFC 300x200 iPhone 5 to Replace Credit Card? This could be a great success, especially if Apple manages to solve the security problems that NFC has. A good solution could be to rely on applications that use higher-layer cryptographic protocols (e.g., SSL) to establish a secure channel. Bloomberg announced in the end of January that new generations of iPhone, iPod and iPad products would reportedly be equipped with NFC capability which would enable small-scale monetary transactions. Being the most waited and used product, chances are that iPhone5 will be the first one to bear  the NFC flag.
The license registered by Apple will have an application for payments, a biometric band that will allow the authentication using fingerprints and a chip similar to those that are being used on actual credit cards.
We have enough signs to say that this is going to be a revolutionary improvement, not only for Apple, but for the whole world. More companies, amongst which, Nokia and Sagem, have expressed their will to release mobile phones with NFC technology, most probably, during 2012.
There are companies that have already implemented the NFC technology. The British branch of Orange partnered with a series of retailers to use this service. There are also current trials in other 15 countries in Europe(including France, UK, Germany, Austria, Poland, Norway, Turkey, Romania), Asia&Oceania, Latin America and Middle East.
